Founding Product Designer

Chicago, IL or Remote Full-time Remote Jun 23, 2026

In the early 1930s, London’s Underground map had a problem.

The rail network had grown into a complicated web of routes, stations, intersections, and geographic constraints. Previous maps tried to represent the system as it existed in the physical world. The result was technically accurate, but difficult to use.

Harry Beck saw the problem differently. He treated the map less like geography and more like a circuit diagram. He simplified the lines, emphasized the connections that mattered, removed unnecessary detail, and created a system people could understand at a glance.

The Underground had not become less complex. It had become more usable.

Business finance has the same problem today.

A company’s money lives across accounts, cards, invoices, payroll, accounting tools, tax documents, payment processors, international transfers, and spreadsheets. Every platform shows a piece of the picture, but few help an operator understand the whole system clearly enough to make better decisions.

Ora is being built to change that.

We are creating a premium financial operating system for modern businesses: one place for banking, cards, spend, bill pay, invoicing, tax readiness, global financial operations, and intelligent financial guidance.

Our ambition is not to make finance feel louder, more complicated, or more like generic software. It is to make it feel clear, calm, powerful, and trustworthy.

We are looking for a Founding Product Designer to help define what that experience looks like.

This is a role for a designer who can turn complexity into clarity without making the product feel simplistic. Someone who cares deeply about information hierarchy, interaction design, typography, trust, and the thousands of small decisions that determine whether a financial product feels intimidating or effortless.

You will work directly with the founder and early team to shape Ora’s product, design language, customer journeys, and long-term standard of craft.

*Ora is a fintech company, not an FDIC-insured bank. Banking services provided through banking partners.

In this role, you will:

  • Own the end-to-end design of Ora’s customer experience across onboarding, banking, cards, spend management, bill pay, invoices, tax readiness, global finance, and AI-powered workflows.

  • Translate complicated financial concepts, workflows, and data into elegant product experiences that customers can understand quickly and trust deeply.

  • Partner closely with product and engineering to define problems, map customer journeys, test concepts, and ship high-quality work.

  • Help establish Ora’s product-design system, including foundations for typography, layout, components, interaction patterns, accessibility, responsive behavior, and motion.

  • Design flows that balance premium simplicity with the reality of financial operations, permissions, approvals, payments, compliance, and sensitive information.

  • Create prototypes and high-fidelity designs that clearly communicate product intent and help the team move from idea to implementation.

  • Conduct or support customer research, usability testing, and feedback loops to ensure Ora is built around real operator needs rather than assumptions.

  • Set a high bar for product craft across every touchpoint, from dashboards and financial insights to empty states, errors, notifications, and onboarding moments.

  • Help shape how Ora’s AI intelligence layer appears in the product: useful, explainable, controlled, and never overwhelming.

  • Work closely with the brand team or external partners to ensure the product and brand feel like one coherent system.

  • Help define the culture, process, and quality standard of Ora’s future design organization.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has 5+ years of product-design experience, ideally in a high-growth startup, fintech, SaaS company, or other complex product environment.

  • Has a portfolio that demonstrates exceptional product thinking, visual craft, interaction design, and attention to detail.

  • Can simplify complicated workflows without hiding important information or removing necessary user control.

  • Has experience designing end-to-end product experiences, not only individual screens or marketing surfaces.

  • Is highly proficient in Figma and comfortable creating prototypes, systems, documentation, and production-ready design specifications.

  • Understands how to build and evolve a product-design system that supports speed, consistency, and quality.

  • Has strong user empathy and knows how to translate research, feedback, and behavioral signals into better product decisions.

  • Works effectively with engineers and understands the practical tradeoffs between ideal design and effective implementation.

  • Communicates clearly, gives thoughtful feedback, and can explain the reasoning behind design decisions to technical and non-technical teammates.

  • Has a strong point of view on what excellent financial software should feel like: calm, legible, secure, capable, and human.

  • Is energized by ambiguity, high ownership, and building foundational work from the beginning.

Especially valuable, but not required:

  • Experience in fintech, banking, payments, accounting, spend management, tax software, treasury, or global financial products.

  • Experience designing complex data-heavy interfaces, approval workflows, payment flows, or role-based enterprise products.

  • Experience building a design system from the ground up.

  • Experience working in an early-stage startup where you helped shape the product strategy as well as the interface.

  • Familiarity with user research, usability testing, analytics, accessibility standards, and design QA.

  • A strong interest in AI product design, especially in making AI guidance transparent, useful, and appropriately controlled.

This role may be especially compelling for you if:

  • You want to define the product language of a company from its earliest stage.

  • You care about design as a way of making difficult systems more understandable and more humane.

  • You believe premium does not mean decorative; it means considered, clear, and dependable.

  • You want to work on a product where trust is earned through every detail.

  • You are excited by the challenge of building the financial operating system ambitious businesses will use every day.

What we offer

  • Meaningful equity and the opportunity to become a foundational design leader at Ora.

  • Direct influence over product strategy, design standards, customer experience, and the future of the company.

  • A high-autonomy environment where thoughtful ideas can move quickly from concept to product.

  • The opportunity to work at the intersection of financial infrastructure, AI, global operations, and premium product design.

  • A culture built around ownership, craft, clarity, trust, and ambitious execution.

Ora is committed to building an inclusive team. We consider applicants without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected characteristic.
